Fat was commissioned by Bristol City Council to expand and refurbish the historic Bristol Bridge. The original Georgian stone structure had been successively covered over by later additions, including Victorian steel beams and 1960's municipal handrails. Our design united these various elements with a new balustrade cast from solid terrazzo, referencing a classical motif to make a gently surreal but sympathetic treatment. The pavements were also to be cast terrazzo with the same pattern inlaid as a series of 'shadows' cast by the balustrade. Fibre optic lighting ran through the handrail, highlighting the pattern at night and illuminating the bridge. Our proposed refurbishments to the scheduled ancient monument won the support of English Heritage as well as 87% of respondents to a local newspaper poll.
