Sarajevo Concert Hall, 1998.
In 1998 the city of Sarajevo organised an international architecture competition to design a new concert hall that would symbolise the rebuilding of the city.
Our approach was to design a striking new landmark that would be achievable within the tight economic constraints of Sarajevo at that time. We looked at how the building could be constructed in phases using straightforward building technology. The desired iconic status was achieved through large scale decoration and a wrap around 'billboard' facade rather than through complex and expensive structural expressionism.
The design was developed in conjunction with Arup Associates and exhibited in the Architecture Institute in Rome along with the other shortlisted entries.
